SUPPORT FOR GUYANA’S AGRO-PROCESSING INDUSTRY – VISIT TO MORNING GLORY INC. RICE FACTORY BY THE GOVERNMENT ANALYST – FOOD AND DRUG DEPARTMENT (GA-FDD).
A team from the Government Analyst – Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) on the 23rd October, 2020 visited the Morning Glory Cereal Rice Factory Located in Anna – ReginaEssequibo Coast. The visiting team from the GA-FDD was impressed with the layout, cleanliness, available records and general condition of the factory. Only minor violations were observed with the factory since, environmental condition, processing and staff records were perused to the satisfaction of the team. Samples were taken and submitted for analyst (Yeast and Mold, Moisture and Water activity levels all parameters that will further demonstrate the satisfactory conditions of the morning glory factory and product.
The Premises was therefore recommended for licence to continue manufacturing in 2020 and beyond. The Food and Drug department will therefore issue a Licence / Permit to manufacture. Since this inspection follows on the heels of the Department acquiring accreditation status. This particular factory and it products license / Permits will be have affixed the A2LA Logo.
It is the Department’s hope that this product will soon be exported form Guyana and again the Department will be eager to facilitate such export with the requisite Free Sale Certificate (FSC) with the Guyana and A2LA accreditation stamp which among other things will attest to the Morning Glory Inc. Compliance with the local regulatory authority.
The Morning Glory Rice Factory was funded by Government of Guyana in January 2015 and established as an agro-processing facility in 2017 under the direct of the Institute and Applied Science and Technology (IAST). This product is distributed by Ansa Mcal and can be found in all leading stores and supermarket across Guyana.
Inspection activities for local manufacturing companies are shared between Inspectors of the GA-FDD and Environmental Health Offices (EHO) or Sanitary Inspectors (SI) in the (10) ten administrative Regions of Guyana. Our work and activated for licensing of factories for 2020 has been curtailed because of covid -19 restrictions, however, the Department in collaboration with Officer in the respective Region will redouble our efforts to ensure local manufacturing entities and in particular agro-processors are inspected and be issued with the respective permits and licenses or Free Sale certificates, albeit this time with the added advantage of an accreditation Mark or Logo.
